DotNetNuke Corporation released version 6.0 of its DotNetNuke (DNN) content management system on July 25th with a resounding applause from its large developer and end user community. The CMS has been completely re-written in C#, in a move away from Visual Basic. Developers can still utilize most of Microsoft’s developer languages using the .Net framework, but C# is the default programming language in version 6.0.

Launched in 2006, DNN is one of the few open source content management systems built on Microsoft technology and now has over 1 million+ users and 700,000+ production Web sites worldwide. The latest version of DNN promises to speed up design, development and updates for developers and content engineers by dramatically reducing the steps necessary to build robust and interactive Web sites.

Some of the new features or modules that can be found in DNN 6.0 include a native e-commerce system, a SharePoint connector, and a near fully integrated apps store known as Snowcovered, as well as, Amazon S3 support and Microsoft Azure Cloud Hosting (platform-as-a-Service).

DNN is available in three versions; a Community, Professional and Enterprise editions. The Community Edition is free, but does not contain some of the new features or modules described above. Paid versions of DNN start at $2,500 per year and permits unlimited instances or site installations, and includes all of the many of the new features described above. The Enterprise Edition is intended for large installations or DNN server based farms.
